KUALA LUMPUR: After Madeline Ong Siok Cheng found out that her sons – Gianni and Keanu Subba – wanted to become professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters, the only thing she could do was trust that they had made the right decision.
The 55-year-old mother-of-three strongly believes that parents should instil as much trust in their children as possible, and to be there when their kids need advice or support.
“I think you should just support your children, because if that’s the line (of work) they choose, trust them and let them lead their lives. If they think this is the path they want to take, just advise and support them when they need it,” she said.
However, Madeline admits that she and her husband, Suraj Subba, did not come to terms with the idea immediately, as they were concerned for their sons’ wellbeing.
“Naturally, as parents, we want what’s best for our kids.
“Like (most mainstream parents), we wanted our children to have an academic background. When (Gianni and Keanu) said they wanted to go into pro MMA, I was initially not too keen about it.
“But, I trust them and believe they know what they want in life and we (as parents) support them 100 per cent,” she said.
Watch Gianni and Keanu trade the ONE cage for the kitchen, as they whip up a special Mother’s Day treat for Madeline, which includes steak and homemade banana ice cream.
