KOTA BARU: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be given a chance to lead the country until his tenure ends and not just for two years.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) vice-president Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said he believed Dr Mahathir still has the energy to fulfil his responsibilities to the country.
"We cannot play around in selecting a prime minister and a two-year period is too short for him (Dr Mahathir) to prove his capabilities.
"As the vice-president of Bersatu, I personally believe Dr Mahathir can help improve the country’s economy, development and others. So give him a chance.
"Let him complete his tenure and after that, we leave it to the rakyat to decide," he told reporters after attending "Majlis Korban Perdana" organised by Bersatu in Pantai Cahaya Bulan, here, today.
Abdul Rashid said changing a prime minister could only be made if the present leader failed in carrying out his responsibilities.
"At the moment, Dr Mahathir has not failed in doing his job. If the prime minister is changed halfway, it will create an uncertain situation and this will affect the people.
"Let the rakyat make their choice and if necessary, a referendum can be conducted so that the people can decide on whether they want Dr Mahathir to remain as prime minister or not," he said.
Asked whether there was a person who could replace Dr Mahathir, Abdul Rashid said at the moment, he believed no one could replace the prime minister.
