KOTA BARU: A total of 74 cases of chikungunya were reported in four districts in Kelantan last year.

State health director Dr Zaini Hussin said the affected districts were Kota Baru, Tumpat, Bachok and Tanah Merah.

"Kota Baru was the highest with 58 cases, followed by Tumpat (8), Bachok (7) and Tanah Merah (1). The majority of those infected by the disease were adults.

"However, there had been no deaths from the outbreak," he added.

Dr Zaini said various efforts had been carried out to curb the disease, such as conducting inspections, destroying breeding grounds of mosquitos and distributing brochures.

He added the department had identified several active outbreak hotspots of the mosquito-borne viral disease in the state.

"Our health officers will continue to conduct inspections especially at hotspots with a high rate of breeding sites for the Aedes mosquito.

“The mosquito breeding sites are mostly found at illegal garbage dumps, empty lots, stagnant drains and open containers near houses," he added.

On influenza A, he said so far there have been no cases reported in Kelantan.

However, he said the department would continue monitoring the situation closely from time to time to prevent any outbreak of the disease.
