PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will represent Malaysia to the late former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie's state funeral in Jakarta.

She will lead the Malaysian delegation comprising Deputy Primary Industries Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin and officials from the Deputy Prime Minister's Office and the Foreign Ministry.

"The deputy prime minister will meet Habibie's family and pay her last respects to the republic's late president at the Kalibata Warrior Cemetery in South Jakarta," said the Foreign Ministry in a statement today.

Habibie, who came to power during the country’s turbulent transition to democracy after former strongman leader Suharto stepped down in 1998, was reported to have been suffered heart failure.

An engineer by training, the 83-year-old former president had been in intensive care since Monday when his health suddenly took a turn for the worse on Wednesday.
