SEREMBAN: Tracker dogs from the police’s K9 Unit managed to pick up the scent of missing Irish teenager Nora Anne Quoirin outside The Dusun resort, where she was last seen.

However, the dogs lost her scent around 100 metres away from the resort, say police.

Negri Sembilan police chief, Datuk Mohamad Mat Yusop said the canines were deployed on the first day of the search-and-rescue (SAR) operation. Their efforts, however, proved limited.

"The dogs’ abilities have their limitations. It will be difficult for the dogs to pick up the scent with each passing day, but we will not give up our search for the girl,” he told a press conference at the Pantai police station, here.

Mohamad said efforts to find the girl have been intensified, with more than 170 personnel, comprising police, the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence, Rela and the Forestry Department dispatched to comb the surrounding dense jungle and hilly terrain.

He said they were confident that the 15-year-old is still in the jungles within the vicinity of the resort.

"That's why our SAR operation today is still focusing on the same area, which spans 4.84 hectares in total.

"We will also focus our operation on the river area. We believe she could have been tired by now and would try to find a water source," he said.

Nora Anne had arrived in Negri Sembilan with her parents and two other siblings on Aug 3 for a two-week holiday at The Dusun Resort, here.

The girl, who reportedly has a learning disability, was said to have gone missing at 8am the following day. She is believed to have exited her room via the window.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on reports that the girl had left the resort clad only in her undergarments, Mohamad replied in the affirmative.

"This was based on the information provided by the victim's parents, who were the last people to see her," he said.

On rumours that Nora Anne was seen taking a shower at a water tank here, Mohamad said police would not discount any leads that could help find the girl.

"Some have also linked elements of the mystical to this case. I believe we can evaluate this rationally,” he said.

He said the girl’s family are still staying at the resort and had expressed their hope for Nora to be found.
