PUTRAJAYA: It is now easier to access national statistics as the Department of Statistics Malaysia has launch its user-friendly mobile applications, including MyLocalStats and BizCode@Stats.
These new initiatives were revealed by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan this morning.
“You can access the info anytime, anywhere. Statistics need to be attractive and interactive so that it’s easy to understand,” Abdul Rahman told the press at the launch.
Also present were Chief Statistician Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin and Country Manager for World Bank Malaysia, Faris Hadad-Zervos.
BizCode@Stats will target the business community with business-related information and MyLocalStats will allow users to tap into data at the district level, including a town’s demographics and the main economic activities.
“In order for us to move forward, the local councils must play an important role. They must be equipped with relevant data in order to make good public policies for their local communities,” Abdul Rahman said.
Another interesting app created was the Understanding Consumer Price Index (CPI) Capsule, which intends to combat misunderstandings about the inflation rate and cost of living in the country.
“Even though our current inflation rate stands at 5.1 per cent, the situation is still under control because our core inflation rate, which is calculated based on a lower basic price for essential items such as petrol, is only 2.5 per cent.
“The CPI Capsule helps us in proving to the rakyat that the numbers are true and we don’t pluck them from the air.”
Users can tap into all the data available for free at www.dosm.gov.my.
