The uncovered drains pose a danger to pedestrians, more so when it rains. PIC BY DANIAL SAAD

PEOPLE should be extra careful these days when walking in Batu Ferringhi.

Checks by Actionline recently found that a number of drains were left uncovered along the walkways in Jalan Batu Ferringhi.

One mistake and you might land inside the drain, which is shin-high deep.

A trader, operating a food outlet nearby, said the problem had been left unattended for years.

The man, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he would always pray for the safety of those walking along the walkways, particularly the elderly and children.

“I do not think the authorities are bothered about the pedestrians.

“If they are, the problem would have been fixed by now. It has been left in that state for years.

“When rain water in the drain overflows onto the roads, no one will see the uncovered drains. Accidents can happen,” he said when met recently.

The trader added the drainage system at the area should also be upgraded to avoid any occurrence of flash floods.

Penang Island City Council secretary Addnan Mohd Razali said the complaint would be channelled to the Public Works Department (PWD).

“The repair work for the area is under the purview of that department.

“We will inform them to do the needful,” he told NSTP in a text message.
